I am a conifer enthusiast (and tree/shrub enthusiast for that matter); I live in Southern California. For one not familiar with the Southland beyond, beaches, palms, Hollywood, and sunshine, there are mountains loaded with coniferous trees. I love hiking in Southern California's mountains and seeing and photographing the Jeffrey, Ponderosa, Sugar, Lodgepole, Limber, and pinyon pines, along with the White Firs, Bigcone Douglas-Firs, Incense-Cedars, cypresses, and junipers I come across while hiking there. I also go to the Sierra Nevada at times to encounter Red Firs and Western White Pines just to name a few. This book covers all the conifers from northern Baja California through California and Nevada to British Columbia with vivid detail. Each shrub or tree is covered with fine detail and inspires one to venture far and wide in this region to find all these species and revere their roles in the environment. Kudos to Michael Kauffmann for this small, yet powerful field guide. I also highly recommend his similarly sized Conifer Country, which covers the coniferous trees and shrubs of far Northern California and far Southern Oregon. It is a little less detailed in the descriptions of the trees than this one is, but he provides information of places to hike and find conifers in this pine-cedar-spruce-fir-cypress-juniper (etc) rich region.

Conifers of the Pacific Slope A field guide to the conifers of California Oregon and Washington Michael Edward Kauffmann 9780939431403 Books Reviews

I found this book to be very user-friendly and a great companion to a hike in the wilderness areas of northern California. The author's excitement and knowledge of the topic shines through and the photographs were both beautiful and helpful in describing unique characteristics of these species. Conifers of the Pacific Slope is an inspiring field guide that will get you excited about conifers!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Wonderful photographs, detailed maps, and comprehensive detailing of species characteristics and habitat. I especially appreciated all the effort that went into laying-out conifer taxonomy - something other books just don't seem to do. After reading this book and Mr. Kauffmann's Conifer Country I feel I have a better appreciation of just how rich the Pacific fringe of North America is with stately botanical wonders.
Although it does provide for reliable identification of western conifers, calling this book a "tree identification guide" seems a little like calling John Muir's The Mountains of California a "climbing guide." This author has personally explored enormous areas of conifer country and made important discoveries on the way. He doesn't just study trees, he loves them in the same way Muir did. And eminent botanists like John O. Sawyer have endorsed his work.
Excellent book. Nothing else like it exists. Well written.
Trees and Shrubs of California (California Natural History Guides).. way better book, the keying in this book was wrong half of the time. The fact that I had to purchase this book for a class is even more of a kick in the gut. the only decent aspect of this book is that the trees are separated by family name and labeled as such.
Seems to be a reliable identification guide but rather expensive for such a small book
educational- love it Easy to find things and just the right size and weight (very light) to carry on a hike! Great pictures for matching flora found in the forest to the descriptions etc. Love it.
