The Playboy of the Western World is a three-act play written by Irish playwright JM Synge and first performed on 26 January 1907. It is set in Michael James Flaherty's public house in County Mayo (on the west coast of Ireland) during the early 1900s. It tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man running away from his farm, claiming he killed his father. The locals are more interested in vicariously enjoying his story than in condemning the immorality of his murderous deed, and in fact, Christy's tale captures the romantic attention of the barmaid Pegeen Mike, the daughter of Flaherty. The play is best known for its use of the poetic, evocative language of Hiberno-English, heavily influenced by the Irish language, as Synge celebrates the lyrical speech of the Irish.

This volume is a fine introduction to the works of the modern Irish stage. Including three noted plays by the three pioneers of this theatre, Yeats, Synge, and O'Casey, this anthology begins with an introduction by W.A. Armstrong putting these plays and these three playwrights, along with the genesis of the modern Irish stage, in context of Irish literary nationalism (the Irish Dramatic Movement), from the 1890s on through the years of the Irish Civil War. The plays themselves make fine reading of course, especially Synge's oft-anthologized "Playboy of the Western World", but one might wish that the volume's editor had compressed his commentary preceding each play into the anthology's general introduction. There is a fine preface preceding "Playboy" by Synge himself that is well-worth reading to better understand his inspiration in writing this great play. Truly he writes here: "On the stage, one must have reality and one must have joy", and one has both in full measure in this play. All three plays, and the editorial introductions to the plays, illustrate how these works, as that of the Irish Dramatic Movement in general, partook of both rigorous realism, in depicting the harsh world lived by the Irish farmer and poor, and an eloquent psychology of fable, of men and women living not only on the land but in the land as well.Product details

Worth reading for the historical value of the play itself.
I love Irish theater. I read years ago from a source I can't recall that to understand the Irish mind, read or attend the works of its playwrights. These books fit the bill.
Playboy of the Western World, has always been a difficult play. It spawned riots wen it was first produced. But it does have several scenes in Act I that are great acting lessons.Especially when yer tryin' to learn the dialect.
It is difficult to criticize this play. Synge used satire in such a way that the first audiences missed it,... They threw things at the actors for insulting the Irish, etc. .When it played at a Great Lakes Shakespears festival, a commentator said it contained some of the best English outside of Shakespeare....
The insight into the Irish Culture was great. The story itself was like a chameleon that turned from tragedy into a comedy and back again. The follies of common folk who want to live vicariously through another man's crime are interesting to consider. I enjoyed the play very much. Would like to see a production of it sometime.
JM Synge, the author, of this play created a brillian drama that still engages lovers of drama and scholars of Irish literature. I read the play many years ago and have taught it when I taught British litarture in college. It reveals a great deal about the relationship between Great Britain and Ireland.
Hypnotically beautiful language,in the lesser known works as well as in Playboy Of the Western World.
So much so that you cans find yourself mimicking , at lest in your mind, the lyrical voices of these characters
