To that end,Adam, an Eracian prostitute who awaits hanging, is spared to join thearmy. In the Territories, a former criminal Ayrton and his youngprotégée Ewan face the threat of the invaders. Can the ruthlessfollowers of Feor be stopped, and the old faith be saved?

The Betrayed The Lost Words Volume 1 Igor Ljubuncic 9781466323490 Books

In the beginning there were gods and they lived in harmony, but then one of them went rogue and basically became a bad guy (god? devil?). There was a great war and the renegade god was banished into an inescapable prison. We all saw a similar beginning countless times before, starting from the Bible and all the way to Tolkien's Silmarillion. Here is where the similarities end.

After the great war all the human nations agreed to create Safe Territories where people would worship gods and live peaceful lives without the need of a military force to defend themselves. Suddenly a new violent religion came out of nowhere with a single goal to destroy the places of worship of the gods. Their first logical place of conquest would be Safe Territories. Other nations decided to join the fun as well.

This is the first book of what seems to be a four-book series of epic fantasy. There are a lot of POVs in the book of some interesting characters the major ones being Adam - a male prostitute who ended up in a military's death squad, a former criminal Ayrton currently from Safe Territories, young brother (a monk that is, not somebody's sibling) Ewan, Commander Mali of one of the major military forces in the conflict; all of these and much more make up for an interesting cast of multidimensional characters with none of them being a pure villain, or Mary Sue.

The plot was interesting enough to suck me in and keep interested all the way until I finished the book. It definitely belongs to subcategory of grimdark fantasy, but I never felt it was dark just for the sake of being such. While it deals with some gruesome subjects, it was never too gory for me.

The final verdict is 4 solid stars with the next book of the series promptly going to my to-read shelf.

The Betrayed The Lost Words Volume 1 Igor Ljubuncic 9781466323490 Books Reviews

I must say I'm no avid fantasy fan so I took this book on just because I knew the author and his writing from his cool tech site.
I was afraid I'd be wasting my time doing so, but I'm happy to say I didn't. It was a good story keeping you on the edge, I liked the intriguing setting and the pace it was going. The writing was dynamic, switching from one corner of that world to the other, but keeping it easy to follow at the same time.
On the bad side, well, I don't know but I found it difficult to connect with the characters. Normally if someone summarized me the story of say Adam the man-whore I'd have found it so cool and wanted to read more, but somehow I was left feeling just a little cold and indifferent to his fate. That applied to other characters I must say, dunno perhaps they will evolve further on in the series. Also while I know it's fantasy, I still think the trick is make it believable and a couple of findings looked a little pushed in my opinion, especially that blood bullet shooting thingy (not that it played a big role, but still...).
But overall I think it was a good read and I think I'll go on with the 2nd book sooner or later.
At base, a standard Fantasy tale of blood and conquest but with an intriguing look at the nature of gods and the effect of worship worked through it. The author has a strong ability to "set the scene," an important skill when viewpoints change as often as they do, here, and which serves to pull the reader into this (mostly) dirty and rough-hewn world. The addition of the detective was great, really elevated a tale that might've grown stale/predictable. Unlike some others, I've had no trouble with the names but wish the ebook I was reading had the map available for consult. Overall I'm galloping to the finish, excited by the prospect of Book 2 (which I expect to be smoother for the writer's experience).

In short, a book I'd recommend, though perhaps not to a teen reader.
(4th time I've had to write this now because not approving my review...)

I got the edition from on sale for $free99 (via heads-up from the Author's blog) and used Calibre to convert it to ePub so I could read it on my Nook Touch.

The author is running a contest where you can win a Ubuntu Phone for reviewing his book(s) on , which is why I ended up reading this book sooner rather than later.

Overall, I liked the story, and some of the characters. I'll read The Broken when it comes out.

*** SPOILERS BELOW ***

There's a scene straight out of Blood In Blood Out when Miklo kills Big Al
The [call man]-turned-emperor is a bit unbelievable
Names used seemed totally random at times (Enrique, Spike, Ayrton, Armin Wan'der Markssin)
Eybalen -- I hear Eyeball-in
Some words used seemed out of place ([female dog], [Eff], hard-core, [pee], turds)
Frog-skin rubbers?
The blood-staff weapon is pretty [neat]
"I am your father" à la Star Wars
Ending seemed anti-climactic, a bit rushed
