I have prayed the Stations every Friday during Lent for as long as I can remember, but this book is not like any other "Stations of the Cross" book. This book contains the history of the Stations, hymns related to Our Lord's Passion, and prayers. Also, the Stations are written in an Order of Service that can be used for public or private devotion.
Most importantly, Deacon and Mrs. Ballard have composed meditations on each Station that give new insights to not only Jesus' sufferings but His life as well. They reflect on His memories and thoughts as well as those of others. Never had I considered Jesus' affinity for wood, having worked as a carpenter, and how that would stir His memories as He first accepted His cross. Nor had I reflected on Simon's reaction as he was forced to help carry Jesus' cross, getting this stranger's blood on his hands. Was it a defining moment in his life? Each Station's meditation urges deeper contemplation and prayer.
Moreover, each Station has an original icon written by Jody Cole. Being ignorant of iconography, I found the brief introduction and explanation of iconography a huge help to me while using the icons to meditate on the Way of the Cross.
I highly recommend this book for prayer and contemplation--not just during Lent but all through the year.
